18 Migrants from China and Ecuador Detained After Landing by Boat in Pompano Beach

A gang of eighteen migrants from Ecuador and China arrived by boat early this morning and were arrested at Pompano Beach. Their improvised boat landed in a canal close to the 2600 block of Northeast 24th Street, according to NBC Miami. Before coming ashore, witnesses said the boat, which was carrying a number of people, including women and children, was traveling quickly through the rivers. After the group arrived, the Border Patrol and local police quickly surrounded and arrested them.

According to CBS News Miami, Pompano Beach Fire Rescue also went to the scene, which took place at 2400 NE 20th Ave., east of U.S. 1. The incident was caught on camera by a neighbor, who saw the ship collide with another boat before the occupants got off and made their way to a neighboring church in search of safety or maybe just direction in a new place they hoped to call home.

Details of the encounter were provided by Chief Border Patrol Agent Jeffrey Dinise, who said that the group included 13 people from Ecuador and five people from China. He posted a picture of the vessel on social media, highlighting its small size and the fact that it had transported the refugees. Personnel from the Broward Sheriff’s Office were also on the scene. The migrants are currently being held.
