(DDN) – Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) in the United States sends out millions of benefit checks across the country.
Who Receives Social Security Checks in the United States?
The SSA’s principal Social Security programs support those receiving retirement or survivors’ benefits, those enrolled in the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program, and those qualifying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
After issuing all checks for benefits under the aforementioned schemes in January 2025, the SSA is getting ready to start February payments.
How Much Do Social Security Recipients Receive?
Retired workers, who made up nearly 70% of all Social Security claimants in December 2024, received an average monthly payment of $1,976.
Disabled workers on SSDI earn an average monthly payment of $1,580, whereas Americans on survivors’ benefits receive an average of $1,832.
The maximum monthly payment for an individual user under the SSI plan is presently $967, and unlike the other programs described above, it is needs-based rather than contribution-based.
When Will the February 2025 Social Security Payments Be Made?
SSI recipients will get their February payouts a day early. SSI checks are typically issued on the first of each month, however, payments are moved ahead if the month begins on a weekend or holiday.
Since February 1 is a Saturday, the SSA will issue checks for this program on Friday, January 31.
It’s worth remembering that March begins on a weekend, thus SSI checks will be sent early on Friday, February 28.
Retirement, disability (SSDI), and survivor benefits
Most other Social Security beneficiaries will receive payments on one of three Wednesdays in February, as part of a staggered system that bases a recipient’s payment date on their birthday. The schedule is as follows.
- Wednesday, February 12: Recipients born between the first and tenth of the month.
- Wednesday, February 19: Recipients born between the eleventh and twentieth of the month
- Wednesday, February 26: Recipients born on the 21st and 31st of the month
Are there any exceptions to this Social Security payment schedule?
Yes. Beneficiaries of retirement, disability (SSDI), and survivors’ benefits who began receiving checks before May 1997 are always paid on the third of the month, regardless of their birth date.
These recipients will be paid on Monday, February 3, 2025.
