A Rhode Island woman is facing charges after multiple juveniles were injured in a collision.
According to police, on Monday, at approximately 7:00 p.m., the Lincoln Police Department responded to a serious motor vehicle crash on Jenckes Hill Road involving a single vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a tree.
The driver, identified as Shirley Catalan Pineda, 22, of Central Falls, had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Lincoln Fire Department. Once freed from her vehicle, officers observed signs of impairment, including the odor of alcoholic beverages and slurred speech. She was transported by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police on the scene determined there were a total of seven individuals in the vehicle at the time of the crash, including four juveniles. Three of the juveniles sustained minor injuries-two were transported to Rhode Island Hospital and one to Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Two additional occupants fled the scene on foot. Despite police inquiries, all parties on the scene were uncooperative and refused to provide information about those who fled. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Jenckes Hill Road at a high rate of speed before it left the roadway and collided with a tree.
A total of four rescue units were called to respond to the scene: three for the injured juveniles and one for the adult driver. The Lincoln Police Department would like to thank the Lincoln Fire Department for their swift and professional response, as well as North Providence Rescue, Smithfield Rescue, and Cumberland Rescue for their mutual aid support during this incident.
As a result of the investigation, Shirley Catalan Pineda is being charged with Driving Under the Influence and 4 counts of Child Endangerment.
The investigation is still under way and additional charges may be forthcoming.
