23-Year-Old Detroit Mother Dies by Suicide at Arraignment Family Demands Justice

The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that a Michigan man who supplied machine weapons to gang members received a sentence of 37 months in prison and two years of supervised release.

According to federal officials, machine gun conversion parts, like switches, buttons, and auto-sears, were supplied by Jaquan Foreman, a former member of the Lansing area gang, to transform semi-automatic weapons into machine guns capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute.

A press announcement stated that after a check of his house, machine gun parts, ammo, a handgun, and a pistol were found. When smartphones were examined, it was discovered that Foreman was giving them to other gang members.

Answers are being sought by the family of a 23-year-old woman who committed suicide while awaiting a Detroit court appearance.

According to her mother, Rebecca Fant, Chelsea Heugel attempted suicide while being detained at the 36th District Court and was later declared dead at a hospital, as reported by WXYZ.

Fant claims that she disclosed to the court her daughter’s mental health conditions, which included high-level ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, and bipolar disorder. Heugel was arrested on suspicion of driving a stolen car and eluding law enforcement.

Fant claims the guards at the 36th District Court were not observing her daughter when she tried ending her life. Heugel was transported to the courtroom for her arraignment from the Wayne County Jail.

“It shocked me… the fact that I reported her mental illnesses, that they weren’t watching her,” Fant stated. “Obviously, she wasn’t watched in there.”

Fant continued: “She was having some struggles, she was going through a domestic violence situation with a guy she was living with for four years and ended up running off and getting involved with the wrong people to escape it.”

Three children are left behind by Heugel.

“Those three kids now, because someone didn’t do their job, have to grow up without a mother,” Fant said. “I have five kids here who don’t have their sister and they don’t understand. Just one person’s job could’ve made that difference.”

The statement also stated that the hospital installed more cameras as soon as possible in order to prevent similar catastrophes.

“This incident has deeply affected everyone at our court. We are profoundly saddened by this loss, and our deepest condolences go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Judge McConico stated.

Currently sitting at $1,895 toward its $20,000 target on a GoFundMe for Heugel.
