3-Year-Old Detroit Child Accidentally Shoots Himself with Mom's Gun

A 3-year-old child in Detroit shot himself on Friday using his mother’s gun, according to police, and is currently in critical condition.

Authorities were called to the intersection of Saint Patrick Avenue and Elmo Street. Following a preliminary inquiry, according to Police Chief James White, the boy’s mother placed her gun on the dresser when she got home from work.

In a matter of minutes, the toddler managed to obtain the gun.

According to White, the boy was apparently injured by a bullet, but he is likely to make it out alive.

“A 3-year-old toddler roaming around, they see you put the gun down, they’re probably gonna pick it up just like anything else,” White stated on Friday.

According to the police, they are looking into whether the mother’s gun license was valid.

Police say that although there was a lock box in the house, it was not in use at the time of the shooting.

Living just a few doors away from the gunshot scene, Lorenzo Hardy says he is aware that the youngster may now experience the aftereffects.

“It’s the trauma, it’s the thing that a 3-year-old has to live with the rest of his life,” Hardy stated. “It’s really, really sad that a child gets to hold a gun; it’s ridiculous.”
