43-year-old Woman Killed in Fiery Crash After Car Hits Tree in Byron Township

BYRON CENTER, Mich. (DDN) – The Kent County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) reports that a woman died in a fiery crash in Byron Township on Friday night.

Around 10:40 p.m., deputies went to a single-vehicle crash near 100th Street SW, west of Homerich Avenue SW.

Deputies said a vehicle was traveling west on 100th Street when it veered off the road and collided with a tree, catching fire.

According to KCSO, the driver, a 39-year-old woman from Holland, was able to exit the vehicle.

Stephanie Deridder, 43, of Holland, was critically injured in the incident and was extricated from the vehicle by attending firefighters.

Deputies claimed that although life-saving measures were taken, Deridder was pronounced deceased at the site.

According to KCSO, an on-scene investigation revealed that the vehicle lost control while driving downhill on an icy portion of the road.

The KCSO Traffic & Safety unit is presently investigating the collision.
