$50 Million Mixed-Use Redevelopment Greenlit for South Milwaukee’s Former Bucyrus Campus

A $50 million mixed-use redevelopment project at the former Bucyrus campus has been authorized by South Milwaukee. A new structure, 22,500 square feet of commercial space for rent, and 171 apartments are all part of the concept. According to the City of South Milwaukee, local officials, including Mayor Erik Brooks and former Bucyrus CEO Tim Sullivan, made the announcement about the project.

A combination of 90 market-rate and affordable housing units will be available as part of the project. Households making between 60% and 80% of the Milwaukee County median income will be able to purchase the reasonably priced apartments. Market-rate townhomes should cost about $2,850 a month to rent. A three-bedroom apartment in affordable housing will cost roughly $2,124 a month for households with yearly incomes between $57,200 and $81,680. According to the City of South Milwaukee, rent for the identical apartment will start at $1,371 per month for people making between $42,900 and $61,260.

The goal of the South Milwaukee rehabilitation project is to improve local business and community relations. “This opportunity highlights what can be accomplished when multiple levels of government work together,” stated Mayor Shelenske. However, as the project progresses, worries about cost and the possible eviction of long-term residents persist. According to the City of South Milwaukee, it is scheduled for completion in 2026.
