64 Firefighters Quell Koreatown Construction Site Blaze; L.A. Traffic Disrupted

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department’s incident alert, firefighters fought a fire at a construction site in Koreatown early this morning. Around 8:46 AM, smoke was observed coming from the roof of the 13-story office building at 550 South Vermont Avenue. Crews from the fire department’s initial response were climbing stairwells when they came across smoke on the third floor and promptly called for more personnel.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department’s follow-up notice, 64 firemen were able to put out the fire in just 33 minutes. Fire crews worked to ventilate the large, smoke-filled building while continuing to check for occupants and any further fire spread. The fire was believed to have started in the basement of a 12-story commercial building that was undergoing renovations. Sparks from work in the elevator shaft are thought to have fallen into trash and caused the fire. No injuries were reported.

Due to the event, there was a major impact on traffic in the region, particularly at the intersection of South Vermont and West 6th Street, where drivers were advised to find other routes through the busy Koreatown district. In addition to working on the scene to remove smoke from the building and guarantee that the fire was completely extinguished, LAFD’s on-site staff planned to start a more thorough search of every floor, a lengthy process made more difficult by the absence of a working HVAC system to help remove particulates from the air.

LAFD PIO As firefighters made significant progress in ensuring the building’s safety and structural integrity after the incident, the department’s efforts demonstrated a coordinated response to a potentially dangerous situation. Firefighter David Ortiz was on his way to be available to the media to answer questions and provide updates regarding the fire and the department’s response.
