A 66-year-old man and his 15-year-old grandson were rescued from icy water on Lake George in Oakland County after an ice fishing accident on Thursday.
The grandfather from Livonia and his grandson from Pennsylvania ventured to Lake George off Leonard Road in northern Oakland County around 1:45 p.m. to go ice fishing.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says the grandfather, who was not identified, was drilling a fishing hole in the ice when it gave way and he fell into the frigid water.
The teen called 911 to report the accident and then tried to rescue his grandfather. However, the ice broke under him and he also fell into the water.
A resident on Lake George witnessed the emergency, got into a kayak and paddled out to the pair. They were able to pull the 15-year-old out of the water and help hold the 66-year-old’s head above water.
The Addison Township Fire Department tied a line around the grandfather and pulled him to safety. Paramedics were performing CPR on the grandfather while he was rushed to an area hospital, where he was in critical condition Friday.
The 15-year-old was treated and released from an area hospital.
“The quick actions of the neighbor and rescuers prevented what would have surely been an unspeakable tragedy for this family,” said Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard.
He said neither of the victims was wearing a life jacket when the fell in the water. Bouchard encourages everyone to stay off the ice due to fluctuating weather conditions this month.
“There is no ice that could be considered safe at this time,” he said.
