FOND DU LAC, Wisc. (DDN) – The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the Taycheedah man who died after his UTV slid through the ice on Lake Winnebago Saturday.
Clay Creighton, 67, has been recognized.
Creighton was a passenger on a UTV being operated by a 56-year-old Fond du Lac man when the vehicle reached open water.
Both guys were able to exit the UTV, but remained in the water for about 20 minutes before witnesses noticed them and assisted them onto the ice, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A spectator gave a sheriff’s deputy and a Fond du Lac police officer a lift to the location on a UTV, but they were unable to approach the men due to an active crack in the ice and 15 to 20 feet of open water.
They offered guidance and an AED to the good Samaritans who were still assisting the UTV’s driver and passenger.

Finally, the Fond du Lac County SARC and Fire Rescue Department members arrived on the scene and took both the driver and the passenger to shore.
The driver and passenger were evacuated by ambulance to St. Agnes Hospital, where life-saving procedures were attempted on the Creighton, but he was subsequently pronounced dead.
The 56-year-old motorist received treatment for hypothermia-related symptoms, according to the sheriff’s office.
Both the driver and the passenger were wearing seatbelts, but neither had helmets or flotation gear.
The sheriff’s office claimed that unfamiliarity with the location of the active crack, which was highlighted by felled Christmas trees, appeared to have played a role in the disaster.
A utility terrain vehicle (UTV) is a four-wheeled vehicle that can carry numerous persons side by side.
