HOUSTON, Texas — A 7-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the arm at a southwest Houston apartment complex Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. at an apartment located in the 12300 block of Sandpiper Drive. According to officials from the Houston Police Department (HPD), the boy was inside the apartment with several family members at the time of the accident.
An adult family member slipped on the tile floor in the apartment, causing the individual to drop a firearm. In the aftermath of the fall, the 7-year-old boy, who had been curious about the weapon, picked it up and, tragically, the firearm discharged, shooting the child in his right forearm.
Authorities quickly responded to the scene, and emergency responders transported the injured boy to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, the child was in stable condition at the time of transport.
HPD officials confirmed that the firearm involved in the incident was recovered at the scene. The investigation into how the weapon was handled and whether there were any safety violations is ongoing.
While police have not yet released additional details regarding the ownership of the firearm or the specifics of the adult family member’s fall, the situation serves as a stark reminder of the importance of gun safety, particularly in households with children.
Gun safety experts consistently emphasize the need for securing firearms away from children, as accidents like this one can result in severe injuries. They recommend keeping guns locked in safes or using gun safes with childproof features to prevent such incidents from occurring.
This incident also highlights the dangers of unsecured weapons in homes, especially when curiosity leads young children to handle firearms without understanding the potential risks involved.
In Houston, accidental shootings involving children have raised concerns over the accessibility of firearms in residential areas. As part of ongoing efforts to reduce such accidents, safety advocates urge gun owners to take steps to ensure their weapons are stored safely and are not easily accessible to minors or others who may lack the training to handle them properly.
The Houston Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances of the shooting. No charges have been filed as of now, and the identity of the family members involved has not been released.
For now, the community is relieved that the young boy’s injuries are not life-threatening, but the incident serves as a stark reminder for all to remain vigilant about firearm safety at home.
