NAPA, Cali. (DDN) – A tragic incident unfolded in Napa on Sunday morning when a car crash resulted in the deaths of two children and led to the arrest of their mother on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. near the West Imola Avenue off-ramp on Highway 29. Authorities reported that the driver, identified as 31-year-old Yesica Barajas of Napa, was traveling at a high rate of speed when her 2006 Nissan sedan veered off the eastern edge of the road and collided with a tree as reported by Press Democrat.
Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of her two children—a 10-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl—who were pronounced dead at the scene. Both children were reported by ABC-7-News to have been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Barajas sustained major injuries and was transported to Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center. While hospitalized, she was arrested on suspicion of DUI-related charges. Authorities are awaiting her medical clearance before booking her into the Napa County jail, per Press Democrat.

The California Highway Patrol is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, including the speed at which Barajas was driving and whether drugs or alcohol were factors. No other vehicles were involved in the incident as reported by SF Chronicle.
The crash prompted the closure of the West Imola Avenue off-ramp until about noon as authorities worked to clear the scene and conduct their investigation.
