77-Year-Old Demotte Woman Pronounced Dead Following Snow-Blinded Chain-Reaction Crash on I-65 in Northwest Indiana

A multi-vehicle collision on the I-65 in Northwest Indiana resulted in the death of an elderly woman in a wheelchair. The incident happened Thursday at approximately 11:35 a.m. when snow made it difficult to see on the freeway. WGN-TV reports that when police arrived at the scene near the Demotte/Roselawn exit, near the 228-mile marker, they discovered that a white Chevy Trailblazer had rear-ended a Toyota Sienna, forcing it to collide with a semi-truck.

Mary Sumara, 77, of Demotte, was sitting in her wheelchair in the rear of the Sienna when the collision occurred, and she suffered fatal injuries. She was later pronounced dead by the Jasper County Coroner’s Office, according to WISH-TV.

The event is said to have been caused in part by snowy circumstances, which were cited as a limiting factor in drivers’ visibility. “The driver of the Trailblazer and a one-year-old passenger, who was also in the Trailblazer, were taken to Franciscan Hospital in Crown Point for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries,” according to a statement obtained by WISH-TV. The semi’s driver was discovered unhurt despite the collision.
