77-Year-Old Muskegon Fisherman Dies After Boat Capsizes on Grand River in Robinson Township

An outing on the Grand River ended for a fisherman whose boat capsized yesterday afternoon, authorities confirmed. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office informed that 77-year-old Davie Gordon succumbed to his injuries after the boat he and another fisherman were in overturned on the Grand River in Robinson Township. According to

WOODTV

, the alarm was raised around 2:30 p.m. by someone who heard calls for help and contacted emergency services.

Both men, hailing from Muskegon, had been fishing in the river and were on their way back to shore when their aluminum Jon boat met an unexpected wave, leading to the capsizing incident. Despite being clothed with life jackets, the two men struggled in the water, holding onto their overturned vessel while attempting to signal for rescue. However, after they were pulled to shore by the Robinson Township Fire Department, Gordon was found to be unresponsive.

Despite immediate efforts by first responders to administer CPR, Gordon remained unresponsive.

WWMT

reported that live-saving measures continued en route to Trinity Health Hospital, where Gordon was eventually pronounced dead. The second fisherman was also retrieved from the water and was seen to at the scene before being taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

“The water temperature is only about 40 degrees, so hypothermia sets in very quickly. Once you get hypothermic and you can’t hold on to the boat anymore, you could have slipped off the boat,” Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office mentioned in a statement to

. The fishermen had embarked on their excursion at around nine in the morning and faced the mishap when attempting to return to their parking spot, further explaining how the sudden wave disturbed the stability of the boat and caused the accident.
