82-Year-Old Woman Charged With Hate Crime After Assault at Edmonds Political Rally

An 82-year-old woman from Edmonds was arrested and charged with a hate crime after she assaulted two women at a political rally. As reported by FOX 13 Seattle, the incident occurred Monday afternoon near 100th Avenue West and Edmonds Way, where the suspect confronted the victims about their race and political views at a gathering supporting a conservative candidate, which follows the re-election victory of Donald Trump over Kamala Harris.

According to My Edmonds News, the incident included the suspect becoming animated and attempting to push an officer while demonstrating her previous actions. The suspect reportedly was questioning why people of color would support Trump and went on to comment on a mixed-race victim’s attire and skin color before pushing and punching her. Then she punched a second victim who tried to intervene.

Both victims, a 55-year-old woman of mixed race and a 66-year-old white woman, were from Edmonds, and they did not suffer significant injuries nor require medical treatment, but the event led to quick action by Edmonds police. Based on the testimony of multiple witnesses, officers established probable cause. They were arrested for a hate crime, as the suspect showed no remorse and posed a continued risk toward others, per the patrol supervisor’s assessment.

Edmonds Mayor Mike Rosen expressed concern over the event, saying, “I’m disheartened that this violence has occurred in our community,” and emphasized the importance of elections and freedom of expression in a democracy in a statement detailed by KOMO News. Rosen added, “Community members peacefully showing political support should not be subject to hateful violence,” and he appreciated the rapid accountability following the assaults.
