Method to Determine the Poorest Places In Idaho for 2024
When people think about identifying the poorest places, the first thing that usually comes to mind is looking at the poverty rate. This means the number of people who have an income below a specific level set by the government for a household of a particular size.
However, we believe that one statistic alone does not fully capture the essence of being one of the “poorest places”. We used Saturday Night Science to examine a set of criteria from the recently published 2018-2022 American Community Survey.
- Poverty Level
- Median Household Income
Once we gathered data for all 34 locations in Idaho with a population of over 5,000, we assigned a ranking from 1 to 34 to each place based on specific criteria. A ranking of 1 indicates the lowest performance. We calculated the average rankings for each place to determine a “Poor Score”. The place with the lowest Poor Score, Rexburg, was named the “Poorest Place In Idaho For 2024”.
Conclusion
Saturday Night Science has identified Rexburg and Weiser as the poorest places in Idaho for 2024. These areas have higher poverty rates, unemployment, and income inequality compared to the average. The American Community Survey data from 34 cities with over 5,000 people revealed Rexburg as the least wealthy location. The ranking of Rexburg was based on median income and poverty rate, with the lowest score indicating the poorest performance.
