The Administration of Governor Josh Shapiro has officially approved a total of $900 million for property tax relief across the state. This money will be distributed through the Department of Education and local school districts. The Secretary of the Budget, Uri Monson, has confirmed that this amount of funding will be available for the next five years, as required by Act 1 of 2006. Local districts are required to pass this funding on to taxpayers.
The Property Tax Relief Fund has been giving $750 million in relief every year in recent times. However, because the Shapiro Administration is making a lot of money and being careful with their predictions, they are going to give an extra $150 million per year for the next five years to help reduce taxes for people in Pennsylvania.
According to Act 1 of 2006, school districts are required to use all of this funding for taxpayers. One way to make property taxes more affordable for homeowners is by increasing the homestead exemption. This lowers the amount of taxable value for homes, resulting in a lower property tax burden.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education will let each school district know how much money they will receive to reduce property taxes by May 1, 2024. This will help lessen the amount of property taxes that citizens have to pay. You can find detailed allocations on education.pa.gov.
