Expelled From Congress, George Santos Quits Long-shot Comeback Bid

Former Rep. George Santos, who was involved in a scandal, has decided to temporarily stop his attempt to run for the 1st Congressional District in New York. He made this announcement on Tuesday. Santos believes that if he were to challenge the current Republican representative, Nick LaLota, it would greatly increase the chances of a Democrat winning the seat in November.

“I don’t want people to think that I am running just to get back at Nick Lalota… “Even though Nick and I have different voting records and I still strongly disagree with his terrible record, I don’t want to divide the votes and be the reason why the Democrats win the election,” Santos said in a statement on X. Santos, who has announced that he is changing his party affiliation from Republican to independent.

LaLota has shown disrespect towards Santos as a person, calling him names like “embarrassment” and “bizarre.” However, LaLota has acknowledged the challenge presented by Santos and has stated that he will approach the race with seriousness.

Santos was kicked out of the House in a vote in early December. LaLota played a role in leading the campaign to remove him. Santos has pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

The former congressman’s time in office was marked by scandal related to his background. He admitted to lying or distorting some parts of his background, but he claimed that some details were just minor exaggerations on his resume.

Santos hinted on Tuesday that he has more political goals in mind. He also mentioned that he is still active as a digital content creator on Cameo, where he sells personalized videos. “I have met with leaders and constituents and I have decided to end my pursuit of this race for the year,” he said in his statement.

“I am prepared and eager to take on any challenges that the future may bring. I am willing and able to serve my country whenever necessary,” he said. “I will keep joining the conversation about public policy and will contribute in my own way… I will always try to be on the right side of history. “I’m just saying goodbye for now, but I’ll return.”
