Study Finds Some Worst Cities to Live in With Allergies

People say that rain in April helps flowers bloom in May. However, for the 100 million Americans who have allergies, this time of year brings a lot of sneezing, coughing, itching, and watery eyes. You might feel like you’re surrounded by tissues and holding onto a bottle of antihistamines as if your life depends on it. However, there are ways to deal with the higher amount of pollen that comes with the changing seasons.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) releases a report every year called the Allergy Capitals report. This report looks at how difficult it is to live with seasonal allergies in the top 100 cities in the United States. These are the top five best and worst cities to live in for people with allergies. It also includes some creative ways to enjoy spring and summer even if you have allergies.

Worst Cities to Live in With Allergies

Wichita, Kansas

Don’t say it’s true, Kansas! Regrettably, Wichita is once again ranked as the worst place to live if you have allergies. The Great Plains can be unpredictable in the spring, with fluctuating temperatures that make allergy symptoms worse. Additionally, the abundance of grasses, flowers, and trees can also contribute to these symptoms.

In this lively city, there are many enjoyable and interesting activities you can do to keep yourself busy and have a great social life. All-Star Sports has arcade games, a climbing wall, and laser tag. Blast Off Bay is known for having the biggest indoor water park. People who enjoy excitement and adventure will love the 38-foot rock climbing wall at Bliss Climbing and Fitness.

They can also try ice hockey at Wichita Ice Center. If you’re dealing with allergies during the peak season, you can still enjoy your time by visiting over 20 museums in the city. Some popular options include the Museum of World Treasures and the Kansas Aviation Museum.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach is a popular destination known for its large sandy beaches and variety of summer activities. However, it ranked second on the list of the most difficult places to live with seasonal allergies. If you have a lot of pollen allergies and need to take allergy medication, it might be difficult to enjoy the sun because you’ll be sneezing a lot. One of the advantages of living here is the wide range of indoor activities and amenities available, which allow you to fully enjoy life without needing to carry a Kleenex box with you.

If you like art, you will have a great time exploring the Museum of Contemporary Art. If you are not into art, you might enjoy spending more time at the Virginia Military Aviation Museum. Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville, a city known for its cultural scene in upstate South Carolina, unfortunately has a high ranking as one of the worst places to live for people with seasonal allergies. But maybe it’s not surprising at all, considering the city has a lot of green spaces, trails, and parks with beautiful trees and flowers. These amenities are really good for most of the year, especially for families and young professionals. However, they are not as good during the spring season. We suggest staying indoors when the pollen count is increasing, but that doesn’t mean you should just watch TV and relax.

Dallas, Texas

Dallas, Texas, ranked fourth on the list of places that are difficult to live in for people with seasonal allergies. However, this result was not surprising to us. This city has a higher number of allergy specialists compared to the average, and also has a higher usage of allergy medicine. As a result, there are many people in this city who suffer from seasonal allergies.

But the good news is that Dallas has plenty of indoor entertainment options, which is especially appealing during the hot Texas summers! Epic Waters is an indoor water park that has a lazy river and exciting water slides. Lone Star Axe Throwing offers a fun experience with its main event, as well as arcade games, shuffleboard, and more.

The city has many escape rooms, comedy clubs, breweries, and taprooms to visit. There are also various museums, including the well-known Dallas Museum of Art and unique ones like the National Video Game Museum. If nothing else works, you can spend your days exploring the local food and eating like a true Texan.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Ranked at number five on the list of most challenging places to live for people with allergies is Oklahoma City (OKC). Similar to the other cities on our list, this city is charming and full of fun. It has a lot to offer for people who usually have to stay indoors when the flowers start to bloom.

However, just like other challenging cities, Oklahoma City offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy indoor activities when the pollen levels are high. There are many interesting museums in this area, such as the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, and the Museum of Osteology.
