Method to Determine The Cities In South Dakota With The Largest Black Population

We continue to have faith in the reliability of data, particularly from the Census. We went there to get information about the race breakdown in South Dakota. The most recent data available is from the 2018-2022 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census.

We specifically examined table B03002, which provides information on Hispanic or Latino origin by race. These are the names of the categories defined by the Census:

  • Hispanic or Latino
  • White alone*
  • Black or African American alone*
  • American Indian and Alaska Native alone*
  • Asian alone*
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone*
  • Some other race alone*
  • Two or more races*

The specific column we were interested in was the count of individuals who identified themselves as Black or African American. We focused our analysis on South Dakota’s non-CDPs (Census Designated Places) that have a population of more than 5,000 people. We were left with 16 cities. Next, we determined the proportion of residents who identify as Black or African American. The percentages range from 6.7% to 0.0%.

Finally, we determined the ranking of each city based on the percentage of the Black population. A higher score indicates a higher percentage of Black population, while a lower score indicates a lower percentage. Sioux Falls was found to have the highest population of Black residents, while Belle Fourche had the lowest number of African American residents.

This article has been revised for the year 2024. We have ranked the cities in South Dakota with the largest African American population for the tenth time.
