Officers at the Michigan State Fair reported hearing gunshots at approximately 9:56 p.m. on Saturday in the southwest section of the Suburban Collection Showplace, located in the parking lot next to Grand River Avenue, according to Novi police.

Several law enforcement organizations in the area responded heavily when the situation was first reported as an active shooter.

Two 14-year-olds were brought to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Due to their injuries, one person passed away, and the other is still in the hospital but is doing well.

According to the police, the two victims traveled to Farmington Hills from Detroit by Uber, and from Farmington Hills to the fairgrounds via another Uber ride with companions.

According to police, the disagreement that led to their appearance at the fair’s parking lot on Saturday night was the cause of the shooting, which happened over the week in other areas.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s office and the Michigan State Police are assisting the Novi Police Department in heading the investigation.

The Michigan State Fair management team announced that in addition to increased police presence, the fair will proceed with modified operating hours and admittance regulations.

“The entire Michigan State Fair family grieves for the loss of such a young life and for all those affected,” the fair stated. “The Michigan State Fair and community law enforcement partners are committed to the safety of the guests and participants. Safety is the top priority and the State Fair had increased safety measures in place including weapons detection systems and increased police presence onsite.”
