Romantic Rejection Ends in Murder Minnesota Man Sentenced for Killing Colleague

A 38-year-old man killed his coworker in a planned attack after she asked him not to touch her, and he will be imprisoned for the rest of his life.

Following his conviction for Nicole Hammond’s first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree deliberate murder, Michael Carpenter was sentenced to the mandatory life in prison without the possibility of release, according to a statement released by the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office on September 20.

“After a text message exchange in which Hammond requested not to be touched by Carpenter,” Carpenter shot Hammond in the neck.

Officers from the St. Cloud Police Department responded to a business on the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue Northeast on October 24, 2022, just before seven in the morning, in reference to a shooting.

Upon their arrival, they discovered 28-year-old Hammond, who had been shot, lying on the ground in the parking lot. She passed away right there.

Carpenter was reported to have left the scene of the shooting by the police, but less than three hours later, he was apprehended after being recognized as the primary suspect.

Carpenter tried to text Hammond about a romantic relationship the night before the shooting, but she rejected him, according to court documents that KMSP-TV quoted. It was reported that he had said similar things a month before.

In response, Carpenter received a request from Hammond “to not make things uncomfortable at work.” Carpenter was additionally instructed not to “touch her” or “manipulate her.”

Hammond’s supervisor admitted that he had “no idea” that Carpenter was troubling him. After her family gave victim impact statements at his sentencing, Carpenter stated, “I agree that she was a really amazing person.” She was incredibly kind and considerate.”
