The historic city of New Ulm, which is tucked away in southern Minnesota, provides a distinctive fusion of German ancestry and contemporary conveniences.
While the city is known for its yearly Oktoberfest celebration and beautiful parks, it also contains a darker side, cloaked in mystery and folklore.
New Ulm Cemetery is one such location that is reportedly haunted by the souls of the dead, making it a terrifying destination for paranormal enthusiasts.
Come explore the spooky stories and strange happenings that have made New Ulm Cemetery one of the most haunted places in Minnesota.
The New Ulm Cemetery’s past
A mile or so from the major haunts is the New Ulm cemetery, which is located just north of downtown. When I came down for the weekend, I really didn’t plan on going here, but I’m so pleased I did.
The size of the New Ulm cemetery caught me off guard as soon as I arrived. It seemed to go on forever, which is odd for a Minnesota little town.
In actuality, there are two nearby cemeteries: the older, New Ulm City Cemetery, where I spent most of my time, and a nearby Catholic cemetery, which I did not visit. A separate area from the main cemetery is dedicated to servicemen.
Nearly 5,000 people must be interred here, some in unmarked graves, others with little more than a stump left to indicate their final resting place. There are contemporary gravestones from today and elaborate gravestones from the middle of the 1800s.
The notables interred here, including the New Ulm founders and a well-known beer family, are among the outstanding features of the New Ulm Cemetery. There is a memorial to the Dakota War located in the cemetery.
There are plenty of tree stones in the New Ulm cemetery. Each one is shaped like a tree and features various family symbols. I’m giving this to the Hermann family.

Frederick Beinhorn, the New Ulm founder
In case you were unaware, a group of German settlers established New Ulm. Wilhelm Pfaender was one of them and Frederick Beinhorn the other.
Naturally, Frederick Beinhorn and Wilhelm Pfaender weren’t the first to “discover” this lovely location encircled by winding rivers. In actuality, the Dakota War of 1862 began with the entrance of the two pioneers and their German companies to found New Ulm.
Frederick did make significant progress by the middle of the 1800s. He came from Germany and traveled to Chicago. From there he took a party of Germans up to New Ulm and settled along the beautiful river.
He lies with his wife today.

The Stone Memorial for the Dakota War
Between the Dakota and the settlers, a bloody conflict started in 1862. The town, which had just been founded a few years before, was almost completely devastated.
Numerous settlers and indigenous people perished in the thousands. A monument to the war dead was built by the city and is located in the center of the burial grounds.

Eerie tales from New Ulm Cemetery
Ghost stories can be found in almost any cemetery. There’s a lot more to the New Ulm cemetery, though. Alley Peterson, the young ghost of the graveyard in Haunted New Ulm Regarding Allie, have you heard? Get ready for an exciting story that the locals are well-versed in.
Little Allie, who was just eight years old, departed from this life. Depending on who you ask, his death’s circumstances are different.
There are others who claim Allie drowned in the Minnesota River that flows through New Ulm. Some claim that he passed away as a result of getting a bad grade.
But the most widely held opinion among the villagers is that he was a poor youngster who suffered from severe illness all the way up to his death and that he had a heart issue.
Particularly around Halloween, the locals shower Allie with gifts of all kinds. In the pitch-black darkness of Halloween night, teenagers wager with one another that they can approach Allie and touch his shoe.
There was a coin sitting on top when I went to visit. It appears like a present was successfully given to Allie.
