FLOYD COUNTY, IN – A tragic shooting at the Harvest Homecoming Festival in New Albany, Indiana, turned deadly when an 18-year-old high school athlete sacrificed his life to protect others. Bryce Gerlach, a senior at Corydon Central High School, was fatally shot on Saturday night during the chaotic event, where multiple shooters opened fire following a heated argument.
In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, we are reminded that even in darkness, love and sacrifice shine brightest. As John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” May God’s grace bring peace to those grieving and strength to all impacted by this tragedy.
The festival, held near State Street and Black Avenue close to the Ohio River, descended into panic just before 10 p.m. when gunshots erupted. Gerlach, one of three bystanders struck during the gunfire, is remembered as a hero for shielding his companions from the bullets.
Multiple Victims and Ongoing Investigation
In addition to Gerlach, two others were injured in the shooting. A 22-year-old man named Brendan Hagan was shot in the leg as he attempted to leave the area with his girlfriend and infant son. Despite being hit, Hagan managed to move to safety before his wound, which hit an artery, was treated with a makeshift tourniquet. He remains hospitalized in serious condition. A 42-year-old woman was also injured but was treated and released.
Police suspect multiple shooters were involved, firing from various locations in the crowded festival grounds. Officials confirmed that the victims were not connected to the dispute that led to the shooting. Law enforcement described the suspects as young black men in their teens and early 20s and warned the public of the serious threat they pose.

Impact on the Community
The loss of Gerlach has devastated his school community. Known for his athletic ability and selflessness, the teen had been preparing to play in his final home football game just days after the festival. He and his father had been actively meeting with college recruiters to plan for his future in football.
School officials expressed deep sorrow, highlighting how difficult it is to process the loss of a young person whose life was senselessly taken at a community event. Sunday’s Harvest Homecoming events were canceled in the aftermath of the shooting, giving residents time to mourn the tragedy.
Response from Officials
Police have identified persons of interest but have not yet made any arrests. The suspects remain at large, with authorities cautioning the public about the reckless and dangerous nature of the individuals involved. New Albany’s mayor condemned the gun violence, emphasizing that such incidents are becoming an all-too-common occurrence across the country.
This year’s Harvest Homecoming was supposed to mark nearly six decades of festive family traditions. Instead, the community is left grappling with the reality that even joyful gatherings are not immune to senseless violence.
A Hero Remembered
Bryce Gerlach will be remembered not only as a talented athlete but as a young man whose final act was one of selflessness and courage. His father reflected on how, despite the evil that claimed his son’s life, love and goodness will prevail. The tragic loss of Gerlach underscores the harsh reality that even in moments of celebration, violence can strike without warning.
