Woman Charged in 2022 Westside Jacksonville Stabbing Death After Elusive Manhunt

Over two years following a fatal altercation, authorities have made an arrest in the stabbing death of a young woman on Jacksonville’s Westside. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has charged 21-year-old Ms’Tayari Chaka Cohen with manslaughter, as announced today. As detailed by Action News Jax, the incident, which occurred on September 5, 2022, led to the death of 18-year-old Laniya Frederick after she was found suffering from stab wounds on Normandy Boulevard near Lane Avenue.

The months-long investigation by the JSO Homicide Unit, including cooperation with witnesses and other significant information gathering, culminated in identifying Cohen as a suspect. According to a News4Jax report, an arrest warrant was issued on July 24 of this year. However, at that time Cohen was listed as a fugitive from justice. After a prolonged manhunt, Cohen was arrested on November 3.

Frederick, the victim, underwent surgery but succumbed to her wounds five days following the attack. First Coast News further clarified that Cohen also faces charges of aggravated battery on a pregnant female, expanding the scope of the charges beyond the initial report of manslaughter in this deeply troubling case.

The arrest marks the closure of an extensive investigative effort by JSO, in conjunction with the State Attorney’s Office. The sheriff’s office declared that after being a fugitive, Ms’Tayari Chaka Cohen now faces the judicial process, accountable for crimes that have left, indelibly, one young woman’s circle shattered and a community grappling with the senselessness of such violence.
