Yesterday morning, the Santa Rosa Police Department responded to an armed robbery at a local gas station on the 200 block of Dutton Avenue. According to a social media post by the Santa Rosa Police Department, an employee alerted authorities that a masked individual, armed with a handgun and clothed in a dark hoodie, had demanded money from the store. The incident occurred at around 6:36 am, initiating an immediate police response.
Following the 911 call, SRPD officers patrolled nearby areas in search of the suspect, who reportedly escaped the scene on a bicycle. SRPD Motor Sergeant and a Motor Officer eventually approached a man on Wilson Avenue and 5th Street, who matched the suspect’s description but wore different clothing than the gas station employee described. Further investigation led officers to discover the suspect’s abandoned bicycle, discarded clothing, a bag containing cash from the robbery, and a mask on the Prince Memorial Greenway under separate bridges.
The weapon recovered, a “ghost gun”, an unserialized 9mm handgun loaded with ammunition and an extended magazine, was found under the Pierson Street bridge. Later identified as Juan Carlos Lopez, the 35-year-old Santa Rosa resident was apprehended and is presently facing multiple charges, including armed robbery and possession of a weapon and ammunition by a felon. Lopez, who was out on Postrelease Community Supervision for a similar previous offense, has now been booked into Sonoma County Jail.
