Suspect Detained in Daylight Murder of Teen on Piney Branch Road, Silver Spring Community Shaken

A suspect has been detained in relation to the Piney Branch Road homicide case that left a 19-year-old dead behind a bus stop. The Montgomery County Police Department confirmed that 26-year-old Abraham Luna Perez, from Silver Spring, was taken into custody, facing charges for the murder of Diego Edilberto Borja-Cardona. The incident was first reported on Tuesday, October 22, when officers found Borja-Cardona deceased in the 9300 block of Piney Branch Road.

In the aftermath of the discovery, an autopsy carried out by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore was able to quickly establish the cause of death as homicide. Detectives worked to painstakingly gather evidence, which led them to eventually identify Luna Perez — a man who once shared a home with the victim — as the primary suspect. Their investigation built a compelling case to enough to secure an arrest warrant. Last Friday, authorities collaborated with the US Marshals Capital Area Task Force to execute the arrest, subsequently charging Luna Perez with first-degree murder.

Further details about the case emerged when the Montgomery County Police Department’s press release indicated that the discovery of the body was made in broad daylight, at approximately 2:38 p.m., calling attention to the severity of the crime in such a public area.

Luna Perez was taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he currently remains, held without bond.
