Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez Takes Initial Lead in High-Stakes 3rd District Race in Washington

In the tightly contested race for Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez has edged ahead of her Republican opponent, Joe Kent, in the initial vote count released last night. According to KGW, the early results have put Gluesenkamp Perez in a slender lead, although updates to the vote tallies are expected both through the night and in the days to come, which could potentially shift the race’s outcome.

Amidst a high voter turnout, a four-hour queue was seen at the Clark County Elections Office on election day. Officials emphasized that ballots would still be accepted as long as voters were in line by 8 p.m., as reported by KOIN. Gluesenkamp Perez and Kent had sparred over a series of pressing issues during a debate, highlighting their differences on abortion, infrastructure, and immigration policy.

Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez, a former auto body shop owner, has established herself as a moderate, priding herself on representing rural and working-class demographics. “My loyalty is to southwest Washington, not to a political agenda. I take very seriously my duty to show up and be accountable,” Gluesenkamp Perez stated, as per Oregon Live. She has secured support from various labor unions and trade groups, reflecting her broad appeal in the district.

On the other side, Joe Kent, a former Army Special Forces member and CIA operative, has promised to cut unnecessary government spending harshly and to ensure the security of the southern U.S. border. Kent, who had an endorsement from former President Trump, told supporters about his commitment to carry on with “America First” policies. Despite being out-raised in campaign funds, with Gluesenkamp Perez garnering nearly $10.7 million to Kent’s $2.3 million, his campaign remains competitive, bolstered by outside groups and conservative endorsements.
