A Bronx man has been handed a life sentence for the 2021 murder of Robert Brown, Sr. in Aqueduct Park. Ricardo Ferguson, also known by the moniker “Maybach,” was convicted on murder, robbery, and drug charges following a trial that concluded earlier this year. The sentencing was announced by Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Ferguson’s crime was described by Williams as part of a violent bid to maintain control over a drug operation. “Ricardo Ferguson used violence and intimidation to maintain control over his drug operation,” Williams said, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Ferguson, amidst a confrontation over drug turf, shot Brown in the head in an attempted robbery, an attack carried out in the light of day with several witnesses present. The evidence presented at the trial pointed to a conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine in and around the University Heights neighborhood park. Before the fatal December 5 incident, Brown had been threatened by Ferguson and his associates for selling larger quantities of the drug than other dealers in the area. On the day of the murder, Ferguson and a co-conspirator’s attack on the 63-year-old Brown escalated violently, culminating in what Williams labeled a “senseless act of violence.”
In addition to the life sentence, Judge Richard M. Berman added 120 months to be served consecutively, with five years of supervised release. The trial and ensuing sentencing bring a legal conclusion to a case that highlights the brutality of drug-related crime within the community. The work of the New York City Police Department (“NYPD”) and various task force officers was commended by Mr. Williams for their role in the investigation that led to Ferguson’s conviction.
The prosecution was handled by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dominic Gentile, Jun Xiang, Mathew Andrews, and Peter Davis leading the charge. They were supported by Paralegal Specialist Ananya Sankar.
