West Seattle’s Don Armeni Boat Ramp is facing a setback this season as Bellingham Marine Industries (BMI) begins the process of removing most of its concrete floats due to safety concerns, it’s the same ramp that opened back in March. In an announcement made by the
Seattle Parks and Recreation
, the hinges connecting these floats started failing and cracks appeared over the last eight months, prompting the removal set for today.
The procedure involves an off-road telehandler forklift transporting each float to the parking lot of the facility where they will reside until early 2025, which is when BMI, in concert with Seattle Parks and Recreation, plans to introduce a retrofit design with new replaced floats — also completing the south side dock with the final two floats, that were originally planned to be installed in early 2025. Despite the planned closure on November 7, the boat ramp, located at 1222 Harbor Ave SW in West Seattle, will still be accessible for boat launching activities; albeit without the extended dock floats, leading boaters in need of a full facility to the Eddie Vine Boat Ramp at Golden Gardens Park, this alternative at 8001 Seaview Ave. NW.
This renovation project has been a financial collaboration between the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office Boating Facilities Grant and Seattle Parks and Recreation. Their funding secured the ramp’s initial completion earlier this year and now necessitates the latest series of retrofits aimed at maintaining the safety standards expected by the community who utilize this local nautical ingress.
In light of the upcoming discontinuation of the floats, mariners are encouraged to check for updates on the project or look for alternative boat launching locations in the city. Information about the progress of the retrofit and the reinstallation schedule will be shared by the city as it becomes available, ensuring transparency and continued service to Seattle’s boating community throughout the reconstruction phase.
