Hillsboro to Host Veterans Stand Down Event, Offering Comprehensive Support and Resources for Local Veterans

Veterans in the Washington County area can expect a one-stop shop of support and resources at the upcoming Veterans Stand Down event scheduled for Friday, November 15, at Sonrise Church, Hillsboro. Today, veterans face a myriad of challenges when transitioning back to civilian life, and this event, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is set to directly address some of these concerns. An opening ceremony will kickstart the event at 9:45 a.m., with the bonus of complimentary breakfast and lunch, the latter provided by NW Natural.

Resources at the Stand Down will range from housing and employment support to health care services—yes, that includes the all-important flu and COVID-19 shots. Also, on-site, attendees can look to find educational opportunities, free haircuts, clothing, pet food, legal assistance, and state and federal benefit advocacy. This breadth of resources comes under the banner of Washington County Disability, Aging, and Veteran Services (DAVS) who work year-round to ensure that veterans can quickly and thoroughly access a wealth of benefits,

from the county.

Vicki Horn, the Veteran Services supervisor for Washington County, highlighted the event’s inclusivity,

stating

“While the primary audience for this event is our community’s houseless veterans, the Stand Down is open and available to anyone who has served.” Attendees of the Stand Down will get to also specifically focus on securing employment, as recruitment representatives from various employers and staffing agencies will be present. WorkSource Oregon will assist with resume building and provide interview skill workshops, as well as career transition support.

Horn’s statement on the county’s website

emphasizes the varied support available, “It’s an easy way for veterans to find a variety of supports in one day in one location.” Veterans looking to expedite their day at the Stand Down are encouraged to religiously fill out an online form beforehand. Those unable to attend can still receive support by contacting DAVS directly at 503-846-3060. The services of this organization extend beyond the Stand Down event, offering a continuous hand to veterans in need throughout the region.

The Stand Down event reflects DAVS’s broader mission to empower older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities, connecting them with services and resources designed to enhance their quality of life with dignity and respect. Their office serves as a hub for this mission, located at 5240 NE Elam Young Parkway, Suite 300, in Hillsboro. The Veterans Stand Down event builds on this tradition of service, reaching out to veterans who have served their country and now deserve every bit of support their community can provide.
