The Hudson Fire in Bastrop County continues to be a pressing concern as local animal shelters scramble to ensure the safety of pets in the region. In a concerted effort to mitigate the crisis, Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), a local non-profit organization that has partnered with Bastrop County Animal Services (BCAS) to move animals out of harm’s way. According to
KVUE
, APA! has been pivotal in relocating 38 animals seeking refuge from the blaze; the group includes 17 dogs and 21 cats rescued between Monday and Tuesday.
With BCAS operating at full capacity and the region’s only shelter serving communities such as Cedar Creek, Elgin, Smithville, and Bastrop their facility is pressed to find additional space for an increasing number of displaced animals, as the fire has engulfed 400 acres and is reported to be 98% contained as of Thursday morning. The organization is urgently calling on the community for support. Patrick McCrae, APA!’s Admissions Manager, told
KVUE
, “The more animals that we can clear out of Bastrop and the more animals that we can clear out of our rescue here, the more work that we can do for Bastrop and in the other communities surrounding us.”
Austin Pets Alive! has also taken the initiative to stay open late, providing extended hours for those interested in adopting or fostering the displaced animals; this measure is key to their strategy, facilitating the movement of animals to safer, more stable environments. In a statement obtained by
FOX San Antonia
, the shelter’s outreach emphasized the urgent need for emergency fosters and encouraged prospective foster parents to sign up online, they are extending their hours until 7 p.m. Monday and will reopen Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. to facilitate foster sign-ups.
The APA! main shelter, located at 1156 W. Cesar Chavez St., serves as a hub for fostering arrangements and as a point for the local community to lend their support. For those unable to visit in person, the option remains to partake in emergency fostering or to donate through
APA!’s website
