An Onslow County resident has been charged with insurance fraud, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance. Alexis Camrey Washington Thompson, 29, was arrested after she reportedly claimed her renter’s insurance for items she reported as stolen, but were in fact sold by her.
Commissioner Mike Causey’s office detailed that the alleged fraudulent activity took place on June 1, with the arrest following last Wednesday. Thompson, whose address is listed as 196 Rock Hill Road, Maple Hill, is said to have deceived Markel American Insurance Co., claiming a break-in at her residence led to the loss of her personal property. Instead, the items in question were apparently sold prior to the claim.
In a statement released by the
North Carolina Department of Insurance
, Mike Causey commented on the broader implications of such fraud, “Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” he said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.” The department’s report emphasizes the financial burden insurance fraud places on all premium payers.
After Thompson’s arrest, she was released with a written promise that she would appear in the Onslow County District Court. The state’s Department of Insurance encourages anyone aware of insurance fraud or related white-collar crimes to report such activity.
