Michigan Man Charged with Entering Capitol with Flare Gun, Torch, and Gasoline in Alleged Attempt to “Light Up Message in Fire”

Charges have been filed against a Michigan man after a tense incident at the U.S. Capitol. Austin M. Olson, 27, of Westland, Michigan, faces several federal charges for attempting to bring a flare gun, a torch, and gasoline into the Capitol. The arrest occurred on Tuesday when Olson tried to enter the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center with the incendiary devices. Upon inspection of his belongings by U.S. Capitol Police officers, a flare gun and a torch were found in his coat during an x-ray screening, and his backpack, which emitted a strong gas odor, contained two bottles of gasoline.

In a statement from the

U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia

, Olson was at the Capitol “to send a message to Congress” and intended to “light up the message in fire.” Inside Olson’s backpack, officers discovered two booklets filled with writings and an identification card. The Capitol Visitor Center was closed following the incident but reopened approximately 90 minutes later.

The security breach prompted a swift response from law enforcement. U.S. Capitol Police took Olson into custody, handcuffed him, and conducted a thorough search for any additional contraband. According to a press release by the

Department of Justice

, Olson’s actions merited charges for unlawful activities, possession of a prohibited weapon, and disorderly conduct. He is currently being held at USCP headquarters pending further investigation.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alexander Schneider and Rachel Craft of the U.S. Attorney’s Office are leading the prosecution. So far, the details about the writings found with Olson have not been made public. The case remains under review by the U.S. Capitol Police, with more information expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
