The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has publicly shared edited footage from an officer’s body camera, capturing the tense moments leading up to the fatal shooting of a man during a SWAT operation at a Lawrence motel in August. As reported by
FOX59
, the events unfolded when officers arrived around 10:35 a.m. at Park Terrace Motel, 9000 block of Pendleton Pike, aiming to serve a search warrant to 40-year-old Kentrail Small, who was suspected of being armed and in possession of narcotics.
The released video shows officers using sirens and a public address system to announce their arrival and the warrant, attempting to encourage a peaceful surrender. When there was no response, SWAT officers entered the room and found Small and a woman emerging from the bathroom. Officers repeatedly instructed Small to “get on the ground,” and as the situation unfolded, calls of “he’s got a gun” were heard before the incident ended, as per
WTHR report
.
A struggle in the kitchenette area led to Small attempting to grab a firearm, prompting two SWAT officers to open fire. Small was wounded and later pronounced dead at Eskenazi Hospital, according to

. The woman was detained without injury after complying with officers’ orders. Authorities also seized drugs, including fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, and prescription pills, from the motel room.
Following the incident, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure. The IMPD Critical Incident Response team and IMPD Internal Affairs are investigating the matter from criminal and administrative perspectives. The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will hold a hearing after the criminal process is complete.
