Duluth Selects Ben Van Tassel as New Director of Planning and Economic Development Pending City Council Approval

The City of Duluth has chosen Ben Van Tassel as the new director for its Planning and Economic Development department, a choice pending city council approval. Known for his contemplative approach to systemic planning, his selection has generated a positive buzz among city officials.

Mayor Reinert expressed his confidence in Van Tassel,

, “Ben is one of the most reflective system thinkers we have in the organization.” He added that Van Tassel’s ability to synergize with the department is key to creating fruitful partnerships within the business community. City Administrator David Montgomery, recollecting a 15-year professional journey alongside Van Tassel, remarked, “I’m confident he has the vision, to continue the work to enhance the department’s capacity to serve and support development and improvements to the City’s economic base.”

Van Tassel’s history with the city began in 2009 when he joined as a city planner, after which he has steadily advanced through the ranks. Before his new directorial role, Van Tassel had been managing the Planning and Development division, and, more recently, he acted as the Director of Administrative Services since early 2022. Van Tassel’s educational credentials include a bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Studies and an MBA with a focus on leadership and change.
