In a recent push to combat crime along North Temple Street, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) made several arrests. Officers from the Pioneer and Liberty Patrol Divisions conducted a joint operation after reports surfaced of illegal activities, according to

. The operation led to nine arrests on various charges, including suspected burglary and criminal trespass.

Focusing on a cluster of former motel rooms at 1990 West North Temple Street, soon to be a temporary winter overflow shelter, officers found people had unlawfully taken residence inside. After the place opens later this month, the SLCPD will remain closely involved with the upcoming shelter’s management, crafting security measures to protect both staff and future guests.

This police intervention came about when the shelter’s management reported multiple rooms being occupied illegally, with certain individuals going so far as to intimidate employees. Police action on October 29 saw bike squad officers clearing over 10 rooms, contacting 13 individuals, and resulting in nine being taken into custody. These individuals were discovered with outstanding warrants and, in some cases, with drugs and drug paraphernalia present.

, “Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.” However, the department doesn’t hold booking photos due to Utah Code 17-22-30, which largely prohibits their public dissemination. From the departmental update, after a conviction is when the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, where booking photos are released by the custodian of record, in instances where the person is considered a fugitive or poses a danger to individuals or public safety.
