In the affluent neighborhoods of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, and Paradise Valley, Republican Congressman David Schweikert clinched an eighth term by edging out Democratic contender Amish Shah, a former state lawmaker and emergency room doctor. As
FOX 10 Phoenix
reports, despite the GOP’s voter registration dominance in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, there was a noticeable shift towards the center following President Donald Trump’s 2016 win, with some erstwhile Republican supporters choosing Democrats or not casting a vote.
Recent redistricting seemingly made the district even more competitive, giving rise to Democrat hopes to possibly flip the seat. Schweikert, who has a reputation for his stance against government debt, narrowly secured his position in 2022 with a marginal win by just 3,200 votes against a lesser-known Democrat who had scant support from the party at a national level. According to
AP News
, Schweikert and Shah have not commented on the election outcome.
However, Schweikert’s image has been marred by a series of ethics scandals. In 2022, the Federal Election Commission penalized him with a $125,000 fine for misappropriating campaign funds. This followed his agreement to pay a $50,000 fine and acknowledgment of 11 campaign finance violations two years prior, following an investigation by the U.S. House Committee on Ethics.
Meanwhile, in other Arizona races, Democratic Rep. Greg Stanton successfully defended his seat against Republican Kelly Cooper in the 4th District, which spans Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler, as per
AP News
. Stanton, the former Mayor of Phoenix, has been representing the district since 2019. The race in the 6th Congressional District was still too close to call, with incumbent Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani facing off against Democrat Kirsten Engel. This district, running from Tucson to the New Mexico border and including a stretch along the Arizona-Mexico border, was similarly competitive in the previous election cycle.
