Fatal Collision Near Volcano on Highway 11 Claims Two Lives, Inattention and Possible Drug Use Investigated

Hawai‘i Island authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of a deadly vehicle collision that left two individuals dead near the 24-mile marker on Highway 11 in Volcano, as reported yesterday. At 1:14 a.m. last Saturday, officers arrived at the scene where a blue 2019 Jeep Renegade, traveling southbound, veered into the opposing lane and crashed into a white 1996 Toyota Camry, according to the

The collision’s force proved fatal for the Camry’s 54-year-old male driver and a 48-year-old female passenger, both residents of Volcano, found unresponsive and later pronounced deceased at the Hilo Benioff Medical Center; the subsequent investigation has prompted the police to believe that inattention and possibly drug use may have been contributing factors to the tragic event, though this has yet to be confirmed and autopsies will be conducted to ascertain the precise causes of death. Meanwhile, the Jeep’s driver, a 39-year-old woman from Kona, was also hospitalized and later transferred to Queens Hospital on Oahu in stable condition.

The names of the deceased have yet to be released as the authorities are in the process of informing their next of kin, while the Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit is pressing onward with a negligent homicide investigation into the affair; they have called upon anyone with relevant information to contact Officer Laurence Davis to aid the inquiry.

These recent fatalities mark a significant increase in traffic-related deaths on Hawai‘i Island, with the count for 2024 now reaching 27. This is a stark contrast to last year’s figure, which stood at 15 fatalities around the same time.
