Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is set to embark on its busiest holiday travel season to date, with a substantial rise in both flights and passenger counts compared to prior years. According to data from Cirium, an airline analytics company, and as reported by the
Business Journals
, the final quarter of 2024 is expected to see 56,076 commercial flights, marking a 9% increase from the last three months of 2023.
This peak in activity places Sky Harbor’s growth ahead of several other airports that are still struggling to reach pre-Covid levels. Having already surpassed previous records, Sky Harbor anticipates just under 8.3 million seats to be available on flights departing from the airport in 2024’s fourth quarter; this is an accelerated 7% climb from the same period last year and a stark 21% more than in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Sky Harbor has also outpaced most large U.S. airports, with only six others scheduling more flights in the last quarter of the year. As the
Business Journals
outlined, Aeromexico’s planned return to Sky Harbor in February adds to an already diverse roster of 25 airlines and signifies the airport’s continued upward trajectory.
Complementing the surge in flights, Sky Harbor’s passenger figures for the first nine months of 2024 reached 38.7 million, rising by a substantial 8.1% from the year before as confirmed by the Phoenix Aviation Department. To add depth to the airport’s portrait of growth, the
Phoenix Sky Harbor
noted that 2023 welcomed over 48.7 million travelers, making it the busiest year in its history and topping the previous 2019 record.
Phoenix Sky Harbor has received widespread praise for its improvements. Mayor Kate Gallego called it an economic driver and a leader in customer service. The airport has focused on enhancing the passenger experience with initiatives like dementia-friendly travel workshops and the rollout of Mobile ID technology in 2023. Looking ahead, Sky Harbor plans to invest over $3 billion in projects to improve services and efficiency over the next six years.
