The nonprofit sector in Knoxville is turning the page as United Way of Greater Knoxville announced the resignation of CEO Matt Ryerson, who has led the organization for five years. Ryerson, who was hired in December 2019, decided to step down to pursue other professional opportunities, according to a news release by the group. Following a significant tenure from his predecessor Ben Landers, who held the position for 26 years, Ryerson’s tenure was marked by a period of transition.
As reported by

, United Way of Greater Knoxville’s board of directors named Chrystal Armstrong Brown as the interim CEO yesterday. Brown’s leadership has been anticipated by the board, particularly by UWGK Board Chair Clarence Vaughn III, who remarked, “Chrystal is a proven leader with a passion for community, vision for transformational innovation and commitment to measurable and meaningful impact.” Despite the transition, the board is keen on maintaining stability within the organization.
Armstrong Brown, who steps into the role of interim CEO, has been with the organization since April 2023 serving as Chief Impact Officer. She brings to the table a wealth of experience from her previous roles, including a nearly five-year stretch as vice president of program development for Emerald Youth Foundation, and as director of education for United Way of Southwest Virginia. Brown has also been recognized for her extensive 20 years of ministry and pastoral leadership, a testament to her community roots, as

Echoing the sentiments of progress and unity, Brown articulated her vision for the United Way going forward, stating, “The United Way is evolving, and we must continue to transform in order to make the most meaningful and enduring impact through our work.” According to
