Houston Postpones City Council Meeting in Honor of Fallen Firefighter Marcelo Garcia

The City of Houston has made the decision to postpone its upcoming city council meeting to Thursday, in a gesture of respect for a community hero. The public session originally set for today and the meeting planned for tomorrow are both rescheduled due to the funeral services for Marcelo Garcia, a Houston firefighter who tragically lost his life in the line of duty.

Garcia’s dedication to the city was demonstrated through his courageous service during a warehouse fire in the Greater East End last Wednesday. Having joined the Houston Fire Department (HFD) in 2015, his commitment was evident at Station 23, as well as in his previous roles at Stations 9, 26, and 29, as per the

city’s announcement

. The city’s public officials are now calling upon the Houston community to come together in honoring his memory and service.

Mayor John Whitmire and city council members will join the Houston public in paying their respects. A public viewing has been arranged for today, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. This will be followed by a public funeral service tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. A distinctive tribute has been requested by Mayor Whitmire, who is asking Houstonians and commuters alike to turn on their vehicle headlights tomorrow as a sign of honor for Garcia.

Rescheduling of the consolidated council meeting is also tied to the observance of Veterans Day and will now take place at 9 a.m. on the newly appointed day.
