A couple from Savage, Minnesota, has been convicted of serious charges including kidnapping and deprivation of parental rights involving their own 7-week-old infant. According to
KSTP
, Amanda Wamack, 31, and Zachariah Christopher Whitehead, 30, faced legal repercussions last week following a child abuse investigation initiated after their baby was brought to an emergency room with a broken arm.
The parents initially explained the injury by implying that the child was merely “wiggly” and might have suffered the accident during a clothing change. However, this incident prompted hospital staff to contact Scott County Child Protection, leading to the decision for the baby to temporarily reside with a relative. Contradicting this plan, Wamack and Whitehead, asserted, as “sovereign citizens,” they were at odds with the law, as found in the warrant
detailed by KSTP
.
The protective measure did not hold for long. Savage police were alerted by Child Protection when contact with the child’s grandmother and parents was lost. After checking the grandmother’s residence, it became clear that Wamack and Whitehead took off with the baby on a Monday night following the grandmother’s recantation of her care responsibilities. This movement was reported as “rescinded” her role as caregiver, an action she took because she did not agree with the initial custody arrangement, as documented by
KFGO
.
Ultimately, the parents were located using cell phone data at Whitehead’s former Kentucky address. Their bid to retain custody outside the auspices of the law ended with their convictions, shining a light on the intricate and painful intersections of parental rights, child safety, and the law’s reach. Their beliefs about sovereignty and the justice system, when taken to such an extent, resulted in the loss of their child and their liberty.
