Rockland Man Sentenced to 11 Years for Fentanyl Distribution Following Prior Incarceration

In a Boston federal courtroom, a 25-year-old man from Rockland, Mass., has been sentenced to a significant prison term for his role in a fentanyl distribution scheme. Ruben Depina, the convicted felon, received a sentence of 11 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, as announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Depina’s sentencing took place today after a guilty plea in August to charges including conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute a substantial amount of fentanyl among other related offenses, According to details released by the

Depina’s criminal activities landed him back into custody in September 2023, where he has remained since. The charges arose from four controlled sales of fentanyl, which took place in May and June of the same year. Details provided by the authorities indicate that Depina, identified as “Jake” at the time, reached out to his former clientele after being released from prison, to once again peddle narcotics. In what seems to almost have been a desperate move, he sold quantities ranging from 21 grams to upwards of 40 grams of fentanyl to a confidential informant.

The situation escalated further on June 11, 2023, when Depina, after a high-speed chase, crashed into a van. Law enforcement officials found a loaded weapon, multiple cellphones, a satchel containing cocaine base, and a digital scale inside his vehicle. A subsequent search the next day at Depina’s residence and loft unveiled more damning evidence with over 400 grams of fentanyl, additional firearms, ammunition, drug paraphernalia, and paperwork in his name being recovered. This string of events laid bare a narrative of recidivism and a relentless dive back into the drug trade.

O’Donnell of the Criminal Division. Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy commended the essential assistance provided by these agencies in curbing a substance that continues to plague many communities. “Valuable assistance was provided by the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office; the Massachusetts State Police; the Suffolk, Plymouth and Bristol County Sheriff’s Departments; and the Boston, Brockton, Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, Rockland and Westport Police Departments,” read a statement from the

The conviction and sentencing of Depina highlight the ongoing collaboration between federal and local authorities in addressing the opioid crisis. Fentanyl, a highly potent drug, remains central to the epidemic, which has had far-reaching impacts. Depina’s lengthy sentence signals law enforcement’s commitment to pursuing individuals involved in drug trafficking and addiction. Yet, cases like Depina’s also bring attention to the importance of addressing the deeper issues that lead people into the criminal justice system.
