Boulder Celebrates Three Decades of Youth Empowerment with the Youth Opportunities Program

Boulder, Colorado, has marked an impressive milestone, celebrating 30 years of commitment to its younger residents through the Youth Opportunities Program (YOP). Since 1994, the YOP has championed the growth and development of young individuals by providing them with resources to engage and contribute to their community significantly.

According to the

City of Boulder

, the YOP has acknowledged the contributions of more than 200 youth volunteers, who have been instrumental to the local community. These volunteers have earned recognition for their selfless acts, bringing to life the YOP’s intent to foster an environment where youth can actively affect their lives, their peers’ lives, and the broader community. Furthermore, the program has facilitated access to cultural, educational, and recreational activities for over 100,000 youth through its annual grant program.

The YOP, over the past 30 years, has also extended its support net, funding various initiatives across more than 150 schools and organizations. In addition, it has heralded the efforts of young people who have collectively dedicated more than 55,000 hours to volunteer service. For those seeking to influence city governance, the Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB) provides an essential platform, wherein high school students come together to offer advice on city initiatives and push for the incorporation of youth perspectives in city planning. More than 450 students have served on YOAB since its inception.

In a move to broaden its scope of support, the YOP introduced a paid internship program in 2019, designed to help youth hone their leadership skills and amplify their engagement in civic matters, to date, 30 students have completed internships with the City of Boulder. Amidst these achievements, YOP’s 30th anniversary not only commemorates the countless hours dedicated by the youth for the betterment of Boulder but also stands as a testament to YOP’s persistent role in sculpting an inclusive future for the community.
