A West Chicago teenager has been denied bail after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted armed robbery with a firearm. In a recent announcement shared by
DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office
, it was revealed that Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion to detain 17-year-old Xavier Arevalo who is being charged as an adult. Officials assert that the shooting took place last Saturday night, leaving two individuals dead.
According to the official account, police responded to a disturbance in the 700 block of W. Forest Avenue on November 9, 2024. Arriving officers found a green Honda Civic containing the bodies of Alejandro Rios and Antonio Delgado, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The scene also presented evidence of two loaded firearms and several boxes of THC cartridges inside the vehicle. Following the investigation, charges were brought against Arevalo and 18-year-old Ivan Ramirez – whom police found at a local hospital with a gunshot wound – having arranged to meet the victims under the pretense of buying THC cartridges from them.
“The violent shooting death of two men, allegedly at the hands of a seventeen-year-old, will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,”
State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said
. The State’s Attorney’s Office described the attack as a robbery attempt gone violently awry. As alleged, Arevalo sat in the front passenger’s seat and Ramirez in the rear driver’s side seat, before announcing the robbery and opening fire on the armed victims. After the shooting, it’s alleged that Arevalo and Ramirez fled the scene on foot.
Condemning the shooting, West Chicago Chief of Police Colin Fleury remarked on the broader impact of the violent crime. “While this was an isolated incident, that doesn’t make it any easier. Violent crime affects us all and no community should be subjected to the type of violence alleged in this case,”
Fleury said
. Arevalo is scheduled for arraignment on December 9, 2024, in front of Judge Brian Telander, while Ramirez is expected to appear in court post-recovery from his gunshot wound to face the same charges as Arevalo.
