Sandy Springs’ Urban Forest Coordinator Honored with Georgia Tree Council’s Top Arboriculture Award

William Park, the Urban Forest Coordinator for the City of Sandy Springs, has been honored with the prestigious Georgia Tree Council’s 2024 Outstanding Urban Arboriculture Grand Award. Park’s recognition was highlighted at the Annual Excellence in Urban Forestry Awards Luncheon, which was held last Wednesday on Jekyll Island. The award celebrated his innovative approach and dedicated service to urban forestry.

“We are extremely proud of Willie and celebrate this accomplishment alongside him,” said Recreation and Parks Director Brent Walker, according to a statement on the

City of Sandy Springs website

. Sandy Springs boasts a network of over 20 parks and 22 miles of scenic trails along the Chattahoochee River. It’s this natural landscape that has come to distinctly define the community, and in recognition thereof Park was awarded a framed, limited-edition print of the “Jekyll Island Plantation Oak,” by artist Barry Nehr.

An alumnus of Emory University, Park’s role extends beyond mere maintenance of green spaces. He is tasked to also engage and inspire the public, most notably through initiatives like the Sandy Springs Eco-Stewards Program. This program facilitates hands-on involvement, which aims to cultivate a thorough environmental literacy among residents—combining education with stewardship.

“Sandy Springs is home to more than 20 parks and 22 miles of trails along the Chattahoochee River. Our urban forest has become a defining feature of the community, and this award is a testament to Willie’s dedication to both preserving nature and serving the public.” Walker noted, as per the

. Park’s efforts significantly contribute to maintaining the City’s prestigious titles: Tree City USA and Tree City of the World.
