Kailua-Kona Bar Altercation Leads to Couple’s Arrest for Double Stabbing

A local couple was arrested following a double stabbing outside a Kona bar. The incident occurred late Saturday night on Sarona Road in Kailua-Kona after a man was denied entry to the bar due to its maximum capacity, leading to an altercation, as the

Hawai‘i Police Department

reported.

The disagreement between a 41-year-old security guard and a 40-year-old Joshua Van Why escalated, resulting in Van Why allegedly stabbing the guard. Bystanders intervened, and Van Why fled the scene. Through investigation, police also found that Van Why’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Rachel Hogan, was reportedly wielding a knife and threatening the security guard before allegedly stabbing a man trying to intervene.

Both victims were attended to, with the security guard being treated and released while the second victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Local authorities, upon searching Van Why’s and Hogan’s residence, discovered blood-stained clothing and an assortment of 26 knives. Further implicating the couple, they have been linked to another stabbing incident that occurred in March at a Kailua-Kona beach park.

Van Why faces charges of first-degree assault and second-degree assault, and his bail is set at $15,000. Hogan is charged with first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, and first-degree Terroristic Threatening, her bail totals to $25,150. Both were due in court earlier this week. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact local authorities or Crime Stoppers to assist in the ongoing investigation.
