Fort Worth City Council Allocates $400,000 for Upgrades to The Herd’s Equestrian Facilities

The Fort Worth City Council, in a move to ensure the continued welfare of its western heritage symbols, approved a substantial injection of funds on Tuesday for the Fort Worth Herd’s equestrian facilities. Specifically earmarked for this purpose is an amount of $400,000, which is intended to enhance current infrastructures while awaiting the construction of new facilities as part of the Stockyards’ second phase of development. This decision represents a practical step by the City to uphold the living conditions of the Herd’s horses and livestock, in concert with Visit Fort Worth, until more permanent solutions can be put in place.

Founded in 1999, the Fort Worth Herd is not only a nod to the city’s storied past with its twice-daily longhorn cattle drives but also a significant tourist draw for the Fort Worth Stockyards, as highlighted by the

. Maintaining the Herd and related festivities is a priority for the City, which funds the Herd’s $1.7 million operating budget through Visit Fort Worth. The funds are sourced from the Culture and Tourism Fund, a testament to the integral role the Herd plays in Fort Worth’s celebration and promotion of its Western heritage.

Impending improvements for the Herd include a range of upgrades at 2500 N. Houston St. These will consist of covered horse stalls, an operations trailer, and horse therapeutic equipment—elements that are not just bells and whistles but crucial for the daily operations and health of the animals involved. Security cameras and a wash rack are also on the list, ensuring both animal well-being and facility security. The financing for these projects is drawn from the City’s share of profits from Cowtown Coliseum activities.
