Philadelphia Launches Twice-a-Week Trash Pickup in Battle Against Illegal Dumping

In a push to address the persistent problem of illegal dumping in Philadelphia, a new initiative is launching as part of Mayor Parker’s One Philly, United City Cleaning campaign. Starting December 2, 2024, some city residents can expect their trash to be collected twice a week, and phase two of the project is planned to roll out in fall 2025. This program is a joint effort by the Office of Clean and Green Initiatives and the Department of Sanitation, geared towards keeping the streets clean and reducing waste-related infractions.

The twice-a-week collection will cover an area defined by Callowhill Street to Pattison Avenue, cut through by the Schuylkill Expressway and Delaware Avenue, residents within these confines can set out a significant amount of rubbish for disposal. According to

City of Philadelphia official release

, each household may leave up to 8 bags, 4 containers, and 2 compactable items each pickup day. However, recycling days will not see an increase, continuing at once a week on the first trash collection day. To ensure the effectiveness of this program, the improper mixing of recycling and trash will result in fines, the city warns.

For those seeking more information or who wish to have their questions addressed, the city is holding five virtual community meetings before the transition. Interested parties can join via a

Zoom session

with the meeting ID 817 4285 0067 using the passcode 308764 or by calling directly at 267-831-0333. Sessions will be held on November 14 at 2 PM, November 18 at 11 AM, November 19 at 10 AM, November 20 at 5 PM, and November 21 at 6 PM, and feature both a presentation and a live Q&A segment.

The collection schedule has been set, but take note, on weeks with a holiday there will be no second collection day. The first collection day remains as previously scheduled and the second pickup, without recycling, follows a few days later. For instance, if Monday is your regular collection day, Thursday will be your second collection day, as outlined on the city’s

website

. This pattern continues with each subsequent day of the week until Friday, with the second collection day rolling over to the following Tuesday.
